How You Can Help Massachusetts Teachers, Students As They Return To School

The start of the school year is an exciting time for students and teachers, but it's also one that highlights the needs of many. Below are a round-up of some of the still active GoFundMe campaigns across Massachusetts that promise to help kids, parents, and teachers close that gap.

Help Feed Mrs. Stein's First Grade Class

From Jeruza Stein, a Boston public school first-grade teacher: "My school services a high-needs population, where the majority of the students receive free or reduced lunch, are English Language Learners, and/or receive special education services. Each week, we, as teachers, provide snacks and enrichment opportunities that are not covered by the school. We are underfunded and benefit from all the support we can get!"

Stein has raised $410 of her $1,000. 

Support the Educational Journey of Estranged LGBTQIA Students

From Together Estranged, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit: The Estranged LGBTQ Scholarship will go towards LGBTQIA students who have experienced estrangement in their personal life while also trying to navigate school. The funds will support educational expenses such as books, school supplies, tuition, etc." Contact: togetherestranged@gmail.com.

The group has raised $680 of its $1,500 goal 

AAPI Book Fund for Brookline High School

From Brookline Asian American Family Network: "The Brookline Asian American Family Network (BAAFN) asks for your contribution to the AAPI Book Fund to build a comprehensive collection of books by and about Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders for Brookline High School students. These books will be dedicated to honoring our beloved Brookline High Chinese teacher, Lihua Zhang Shorter, upon her retirement this October. They will be housed in the BHS Library for all students and teachers to enjoy."

The group has raised $8,400 of its $10,000 goal. 

Golden Start Backpack Drive

From Golden Wat: "As young, first-generation Asian-American children growing up in government-assisted housing, we've experienced hardships similar to most children in our situation. Fast-forward, and now the Golden Wat team and I have the opportunity to support children experiencing those same hardships ... Our goal is to provide 1,000 backpacks with school supplies back to the communities that need them most. We believe that even a gesture this small can have a great impact on a student's academic success while alleviating the financial burden on their families." 

Golden Wat has raised $1,620 raised of its $7,000 goal.

Medway Playground Communication Boards

From Special Education Samantha Ellis: "I have a passion for working with individuals with special needs, and I have a vision for creating an inclusive and compassionate community - not only for our current population but also for the younger generations to learn from, demonstrate for the future generations, and sustain for years to come ... I am confident that this amazing community can raise $750 to fund inclusive communication boards for all of the playgrounds in Medway!"

Ellis has raised $225 raised of her $750 goal. 

Classroom Supplies Greater Boston Academy

From first-grade teacher Vanessa Betancourt: "As a new teacher, my classroom needs lots of supplies, furniture, electronics, and most importantly books! As many of you know, first grade is essential for a child’s reading level. Here is where they will learn to not only recognize letters and form sentences and begin to learn to write, but also it’s an important transition to their academic learning starting with learning to read."

Betancourt has raised $900 of her $1,000 goal.
